Everywhere-in-focus images are more desirable for human perception and computer based analysis
such as vision based industrial inspection and quality control in manufacturing. In this paper, a region
based fuzzy method that combines the sharper regions of images with diverse focuses is proposed.
First, source images are decomposed into image blocks. Next, a fuzzy criterion is employed to
measure the sharpness of each block. Then, the sharper image block is transferred to the fused
image. The proposed method is compared with the region based pixel level method. Experimental
results demonstrate that the proposed image fusion method is better in both quantitative and
subjective evaluations.
