ABSTRACT
Urban parks have been one of the most important building blocks of the city throughout the
historical process. In the nineteenth century, landscape architects and park advocates played a
major role in the design transformation of parks. City parks were spaces for public political and
social debate, and they were supposed to be places where different social classes could come
together and express different ideas. Park advocates also believed that urban parks could help
people's physical and mental development. For this reason, they enlisted the support of
landscape architects to convince city governments of the need for detailed design of urban
parks. There were class divisions and disagreements in the use of parks between the working
class, the middle class and the elite. The increasing debates and tensions due to these class
distinctions had an impact on the design process of the parks, and this study examines the
periods of design processes caused by class differences. In summary, the influence and roles of
different social classes in the design process of urban parks and how urban parks have changed
and transformed over different historical periods have been revealed. In addition, the process
of forming park users and usage behaviors has been examined.
