Earthquakes significantly threaten human life, with injuries often resulting from collapsing buildings and overturned furniture. This study explores integrating self-rescue spaces into furniture to prevent crush injuries and address post-earthquake shelter needs. Conducted during the Fall 2022 Experimental Design Studio at Abdullah Gül University, the study involved collaboration with a well-known furniture design firm. Students developed dual-purpose furniture designs serving as both functional objects in daily life and emergency shelters during disasters. Projects were categorized into solutions for use during and after earthquakes, focusing on office, home, and transformable furniture. Findings highlight innovative approaches to risk reduction and post-disaster recovery through functional and adaptable designs.
