Cavability of the goaf in longwall mining is rather important to maintain an effective ground control, to minimize the loss of life and property and to increase the efficiency of production. This case becomes quite important in the longwalls of the Zonguldak Basin, where timber support is extensively used parallel to the coal face. This study is prepared as of two parts; in first part of the study, first, caving mechanism of the longwalls is summarized. After that; the effective parameters for caving are mentioned and presented in a sequence. Roof caving classifications previously proposed are summarized and the parameters used in classification systems are proportionally examined. In the light of the caving classifications previously proposed, a modified roof caving classification system is proposed for the longwalls in Zonguldak Hardcoal Basin. The classification system proposed in this study, has been applied to some selected longwalls and has been compared with other roof caving classification systems. Consequently, the proposed classification system has been seen in conformity with the other classification systems.
