Abstract

This research seeks to analyze the spatial organization of the chosen neighborhoods in four districts (Üsküdar, Ümraniye, Kadıköy, and Ataşehir) on the Anatolian Side of Istanbul utilizing Clarence Perry's concept of a neighborhood unit and to evaluate their compliance with this concept by examining accessibility to the amenities. To calculate the accessibility from building to the amenities (elementary school, local shops, green areas, and health care services), one of the geographic information system tools, which is “QGIS” software is used.

Perry's concept of neighborhood, stated in broad terms, is as follows: The concepts of neighborhood units include ensuring housing for a population that normally requires one primary school, with the specific area determined by population density. The unit should be surrounded by major thoroughfares, ensuring convenient accessibility for all vehicles passing through. It is necessary to create open places, such as small parks and leisure areas. Institutional locations should be clustered around a central focal point or shared space, with schools and other establishments servicing the boundaries of the unit. It is ideal for local stores to be situated within the immediate area of the unit, particularly at intersections with heavy traffic and in close proximity to comparable areas in neighboring districts. The unit should have a specialized street system, where each highway is appropriately sized based on its traffic volume. This design aims to optimize internal circulation inside the unit while discouraging the usage of the streets for through traffic.

Following the criteria listed above, the research aims to provide a design plan by analyzing the neighborhoods in four districts (Üsküdar, Ümraniye, Kadıköy, and Ataşehir) in the Anatolian Side of Istanbul according to Perry's notion of an ideal neighborhood and access. In accordance with the aim of this research, the data of the chosen neighborhoods from Üsküdar, Ümraniye, Kadıköy, and Ataşehir districts of İstanbul will be processed using the QGIS software. Furthermore, a spatial analysis will be conducted by using several analysis methods.
